A Legacy of Service. A Tradition of Hope.

The legacy of Atlanta Fire Rescue Station 16 is one defined by courage, service, and an unwavering commitment to community. The mantra “First in Courage, Last in Fear” lives far beyond Station 16—it has become a way of life.

In 1963, the Atlanta Fire Department made history by hiring its first 16 African American male firefighters. These trailblazers broke racial barriers during a pivotal moment in our nation’s civil rights movement. Assigned to Station 16, they served the communities of Vine City, English Avenue, and Washington Park—not only as first responders, but as trusted pillars of strength during a time of profound social change.

In 1977, the department continued that legacy of progress by welcoming its first seven African American female firefighters—further breaking barriers and paving the way for greater diversity and inclusion within the fire service.

More Than Firefighters—Community Builders

Their impact extended far beyond emergency response.

In 1970, these firefighters began a holiday tradition rooted in compassion—opening their doors to neighborhood families for a warm meal and gifts for their children. What started as a simple act of kindness quickly became a powerful symbol of trust, unity, and hope.

Station 16 became more than a fire station—it became a cornerstone of the community.

A Tradition That Lives On

More than 50 years later, that tradition continues.

Each December, the men and women of Station 16, in partnership with the Atlanta Fire Rescue Foundation, host this cherished community celebration—providing meals and holiday gifts to more than 400 children and their families.

For many, this event is more than a celebration—it’s a moment of joy, relief, and connection during a time when it’s needed most.

Our Goal: $30,000+ to Serve 400+ Children

To sustain and grow this impact, we are seeking to raise $30,000+ to support:

  • Holiday meals for families
  • Gifts for over 400 children
  • Event logistics and operations

Every dollar goes directly toward creating a meaningful and memorable experience for families in Vine City and surrounding communities.

Partner With Purpose

We invite corporate partners, community organizations, and civic leaders to join us in this mission.

Ways to get involved:

  • Sponsor the event
  • Volunteer alongside Station 16 firefighters
  • Provide in-kind donations or services
  • Collaborate on community engagement initiatives

This is more than a sponsorship—it’s an opportunity to align with a legacy of service, equity, and lasting impact.
