History of Initiative
The legacy of Atlanta Fire Rescue Station 16 is one deeply rooted in service, community, and history. In 1963, the Atlanta Fire Department made history by hiring 16 African American firefighters—trailblazers who broke racial barriers and opened doors for future generations. Stationed at Fire Station 16, they served the Vine City, English Avenue, and Washington Park neighborhoods during a time of great social change and unrest.
Beyond their duties as firefighters, these men chose to uplift the community they protected. In 1970, they began a holiday tradition—inviting neighborhood families to the station for a warm meal and gifts for their children. This gesture of compassion fostered a lasting bond of trust between first responders and the families they served, turning Fire Station 16 into more than just a place of emergency response—it became a pillar of hope and unity.
More than 50 years later, that tradition continues. Each December, the men and women of Station 16, in partnership with the Atlanta Fire Rescue Foundation, host this cherished community celebration. Together, they provide meals and holiday gifts for over 400 children, ensuring that families in need experience joy and togetherness during the holiday season.
To continue this meaningful tradition, we are seeking to raise $30,000. These funds will go directly toward food, gifts, and event expenses—allowing Station 16 firefighters to keep serving not just through emergencies, but through acts of kindness that strengthen community ties.
Your support helps preserve a legacy that began with courage, compassion, and commitment. By contributing, you are not only helping to bring holiday cheer to hundreds of families—you are helping honor a powerful chapter in Atlanta’s history and ensuring that the spirit of Station 16 continues to shine for generations to come.
