The Atlanta Fire Rescue Department (AFRD) is seeking qualified and committed individuals for the position of Firefighter/ Advanced-EMT (Recruit). The AFRD staffs 35 fire stations, including five stations at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport. We have more than 1,100 employees, sworn and civilian, serving an area of 132 square miles within the Atlanta city limits.

Minimum Qualifications

All applicants for employment with AFRD are subject to a thorough background investigation to verify the accuracy of statements provided within the application. While the AFRD reviews much information and considers the circumstances in many areas regarding an applicant’s background, the following factors are some of those that will disqualify applicants from consideration:

Be a legal United States citizen, possess valid and current documentation to be legally employed in the state of Georgia
18 years of age and older or will become 18 years old before the end of the fire academy
Possess a valid U.S. driver’s license
HS diploma, or GED certificate
Acceptable 3-year driving record
Honorable or Uncharacterized discharge from a military branch

Employment Disqualifiers

Intentionally falsifying, misrepresenting, or omitting information from the employment application, questionnaires, CVSA examination or another pre-employment document (s).
Failure to meet required educational requirements.
Any outstanding criminal charge pending adjudication.
Use of illegal drugs in violation of AFRD Pre-employment Drug Policy.
One (1) or more DUI convictions within three (3) years
No current probation or parole status.
Any tattoos or branding on the following body areas is prohibited. (i.e. neck, face, scalp, ears, or hand)
Deliberately making inaccurate, misleading, false, or fraudulent statements during the employment process.
Any felony conviction.
Conviction of two (2) or more misdemeanors within three (3) years.
A driver's license that is currently suspended, revoked or expired.
Three (3) or more moving violations within three (3) years.
Must have not received a dishonorable or undesirable discharge from any of the Armed Forces of the United States.

Program Duration & Scope

Compensation

The recruits earn Starting Pay ($54,613) while assigned to the Training Academy.
Recruits are eligible to apply for Degree (Associate & Bachelor), Bilingual Bonus, Paramedic Bonus incentives upon promotion to Field Operations.
Recruits have Benefits (health, dental, vision), Pension Options, and Paid Academy Training.

AFRD's recruitment office is appointment-only, individuals without a confirmed CPAT/interview appointment will be turned away.

AFRD does not permit "ride-alongs".

Please note that AFRD does not offer a "Fast-Track" program for experienced firefighters nor lateral positions. However, we encourage anyone to apply.

AFRD offers only 3 firefighter recruit classes a year. Placement into these classes is dependent on applicant's physical ability test, written test, interview, background investigation, medical exam, and psychological exam.
