The Atlanta Fire Rescue Department (AFRD) is seeking qualified and committed individuals for the position of Firefighter/ Advanced-EMT (Recruit). The AFRD staffs 35 fire stations, including five stations at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport. We have more than 1,100 employees, sworn and civilian, serving an area of 132 square miles within the Atlanta city limits.

 Minimum Qualifications

  • U.S. Citizenship or Naturalization
  • 18 years of age and older or will become 18 years old before the end of the fire academy.
  • Possess a valid U.S. driver’s license
  • HS diploma, or GED certificate
  • Acceptable 3-year driving record
  • Honorable or Uncharacterized discharge from a military branch

All applicants for employment with AFRD are subject to a thorough background investigation to verify the accuracy of statements provided within the application. While the AFRD reviews much information and considers the circumstances in many areas regarding an applicant’s background, the following factors are some of those that will disqualify applicants from consideration:

Employment Disqualifiers - This is a partial list and is not all inclusive

Intentionally falsifying, misrepresenting, or omitting information from the employment application, questionnaires, CVSA examination or another pre-employment document (s).

Deliberately making inaccurate, misleading, false, or fraudulent statements during the employment process.

Failure to meet required educational requirements.

Any felony conviction.

Any outstanding criminal charge pending adjudication.

Conviction of two (2) or more misdemeanors within three (3) years

Use of illegal drugs in violation of AFRD Pre-employment Drug Policy.

A driver’s license that is currently suspended, revoked or expired.

One (1) or more DUI convictions within three (3) years.

Three (3) or more moving violations within three (3) years.

No current probation or parole status.

Must not have received a dishonorable or undesirable discharge from any of the Armed Forces of the United States.

Any tattoos or branding on the following body areas is prohibited.

(i.e. neck, face, scalp, ears, or hand)
